Surrey LIP: Congratulations to Vancity and City of Surrey: Train the Trainer Session Was a Success
Monday, November 7, 2016

On October 11, 2016 over 40 Surrey-based settlement and employment counselors attended a "Train the Trainer" session organized by Surrey LIP in partnership with City of Surrey and Vancity HR professionals.

The goal of the session was to provide detailed information about unique hiring processes at two organizations and "raise the capacity and expertise of the employment service sector to address current and emerging challenges and demands in immigrant employment" (Surrey Immigrant Integration Strategy, Objective 12).

The City of Surrey is probably one of the largest employers in Surrey with an employee base of 3,000. It is also a unionized employer which affects many of its protocols and hiring processes. Meeting educational requirements (a Certification in ....) and passing tests (typing, etc.) are required steps in getting to interview.

Vancity is a credit union with strong community presence in Surrey. Evidently, having local community knowledge and engagement significantly affects job candidate's prospects of being hiring. Feeling comfortable talking with a Vancity HR on the phone, being friendly and confident during an interview, knowing what is happening in your community and being able to talk about your volunteer experiences are all critical elements of a successful interview These abilities are as important as your technical  knowledge or other experiences.

Unprecedented 96% of all training attendees provided their feedback on the session which was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees asked organizing similar sessions on a regular basis "We need more of these type of sessions every a couple of months", they said.

The Surrey LIP team would like to thank the following individuals for making this collaboration possible:
