How to Use the Racism Mapping Project Virtual Workshop

February 4, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 10:30 am

Join this this workshop to learn how to use RAMP, the new racism-charting online map which allows your voice to be heard by the community of Surrey.

About this event

Surrey Local Immigration Partnership is pleased to announce the launch of The Racism Mapping Project (RAMP). RAMP is a community-led research project that gathers data around racism and hate incidents taking place in Surrey, BC. In partnership with PeaceGeeks, we have adapted a data map that plots such incidents across the City of Surrey in order to chart the types of hate events that have occurred and the people they have been directed at. Our aim is to equip the multiracial community of Surrey with the means to combat bigotry that prevents newcomers and immigrants from reaching their settlement goals. This initiative endeavours to curb discriminatory attitudes in Surrey and allow newcomers to feel comfortable and welcomed in their communities.

The launch of this community map is intended to address our firm conviction that in Canada, racism against Indigenous peoples, newcomers, and immigrants is a norm and needs to be proactively addressed.

RAMP is a mapping tool that will gather information directly from people who have themselves been the target of hate incidents themselves or have witnessed someone else being discriminated against. RAMP is not a platform for reporting hate incidents to the authorities or the RCMP. Reporters of such incidents will remain fully anonymous and the sole reason to collect this information is to support the community of Surrey in promoting anti-racism policies.
