Elimination of Racial Discrimination

March 20, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Join us for the panel discussions, Theater of the Oppressed, networking opportunities, and breakout room sessions.

Hear from panelists Elder Colleen Pierre from Katzie Nation, Jennifer Reddy School Trustee, and Samir Traore SFU VP Equity, Diversity & Inclusion presenting on Racism Through and indigenous, local, provincial and educational lens – Approaching systemic barriers through a variety of contexts.

Theatre of the Oppressed was first created by Brazilian theatre practitioner and visionary Augusto Boal and based on work of educator and theorist Paulo Freire and his book “Pedagogy of The Oppressed”.

It is a form of popular community-based education that uses theatre as a tool for transformation. Originally developed out of Boal’s work with peasant and worker populations, it’s now used across the world as a form of social and political activism, community building, and education.

In Theatre of the Oppressed, the audience is not made of spectators, but rather as “spect-actors”. Everyone is invited to share their opinion on the issues of hand and actively participate in the theatrical presentation.
