2016-2017 Annual Report

In pursuit of Surrey LIP's commitment to transparency and accountability we developed this microsite which summarizes our activities in 2016-2017. We believe that it is important to report on our progress and reflect on how our efforts translate into a more welcoming and inclusive Surrey.

2016-2017 was a busy year - a year of actions, as refugees arrived in our community in unprecedented numbers and we joined the national campaign to welcome them. Surrey has become British Columbia's arrival city, accepting up to half of all refugees in the province. Even before Canada’s Syrian refugee plans were announced, we determined that refugees were such a key element for Surrey that we required a Refugee Integration Strategy distinct from our strategy for immigrant integration. In 2016-2017, we continued engaging key stakeholders in consultations and the development of a 3-year Surrey Refugee Integration Strategy, entitled Surrey: Our New Home.

The year was also a time of transition, as we moved from formulating our Immigrant Integration Strategy, which we completed in the first two years of our work, to implementing it. Here you will find an overview of our activities, arranged according to the Strategic Directions identified in our Immigrant Integration Strategy. We also included a brief summary of our refugee welcoming activities.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Surrey LIP Committee, Surrey IAR, Refugee Youth Planning team and the many other LIP partners who cumulatively spent thousands of hours working towards this community collaboration to make Surrey a better place for newcomers.

You can download and read the printed version of the Annual Report which also includes reflections and messages from our Co-Chairs: Councillor Judy Villeneuve and Anita Huberman. You can also review 2016-2017 Surrey LIP In Numbers.
