Play Day for the Kids! Summer Soccer Day in the works for Newton
Wednesday, May 24, 2017

The opportunity to play soccer is something many refugees and other newcomer youth in Surrey have expressed they want. The importance of soccer was even highlighted by the fact that the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Ahmed Hussen, joined a group of youth from Fresh Voices in Vancouver in a game of soccer during his recent visit to the west coast.

With the importance of soccer in mind, Kidsplay, a non-profit organization focused on promoting sports to youth vulnerable to the influences of gang violence, have teamed up with Bahia Expert Soccer Training (BEST) to bring together a hundred children of all different ages for a day of soccer. With food, music, trophies, prizes, soccer drills, and even full games, this mini soccer academy will be a special day for kids in Surrey to enjoy themselves and all feel like winners!

The academy on the field, including drills, games, and scrimmages, will be run by Paul Bahia from BEST. Paul is an experienced coach and inspirational figure to many soccer players in the Lower Mainland. All necessary equipment, such as balls, cones, and nets, will also be provided by BEST. Plenty of volunteers from both BEST and Kidsplay will also be on hand to ensure that children are absolutely comfortable and social service workers may be consulted in advance to ensure this is a safe, productive environment for any vulnerable youth in attendance.

Buses will be provided to bring children to and from Newton Athletic Park and organizers will ensure all insurance and first aid requirements are met. The aim is to hold the soccer event during a weekday at the end of June or early July.
