Strategic Direction: Thriving Youth

GOAL: Surrey is an inclusive and supportive community in which all immigrant youth have the opportunity to thrive and grow, while enjoying full access to educational, labour market, recreational and family resources, and opportunities.

In 2016-2017, as part of the Thriving Youth Strategic Direction of the Surrey Immigrant Integration Strategy, the Surrey LIP undertook the following initiatives:

  • Refugee Youth Planning Team: The team was established to bring together refugee youth from Surrey to connect, learn, and develop leadership skills. It was responsible for planning and hosting two community events.
  • Art Exchange Collaboration for Youth: The Refugee Youth Planning Team planned and hosted an art exchange and collaboration. The event was hosted at Surrey Public Library and brought together youth from varied backgrounds to meet and create art together. Over 20 community members attended the event and the art pieces created were displayed at the youth forum and a special citizenship ceremony.
  • Newcomer Youth Voices Leadership Conference: The Refugee Youth Planning Team, with the support of community consultants, Surrey LIP staff, and City of Surrey staff, planned and hosted a youth leadership conference. The conference brought together over 80 youth for a day of learning, fun, and cultural exchange.
