Strategic Direction: Meaningful Employment

GOAL: Surrey has a vibrant economy where employers and businesses fully realize the benefits of immigration and immigrants are economically integrated.

As part of the Meaningful Employment Strategic Direction of the Surrey Immigrant Integration Strategy, in 2016-2017 the Surrey LIP undertook the following initiatives:

  • Train the Trainer: These sessions, organized by Surrey LIP in partnership with City of Surrey and Vancity HR professionals, brought together over 40 Surrey-based settlement and employment counselors. The goal of the session was to provide detailed information about unique hiring processes at two organizations and to build the capacity and expertise of the employment service sector.
  • Employer Go2 Resource: This online tool, launched in March 2017, provides an easy one-stop-shop for resources designed to help Surrey-based employers connect with newcomer talent. This tool was built by the Surrey LIP with input from the Surrey LIP Employer Advisory Group.
  • Surrey LIP Employer Advisory Group:  In 2016, the Surrey LIP convened an Employer Advisory Group to provide input on matters around immigrant employment. Over 17 community groups are represented through this advisory group.
  • Sector Dialogues: This series of roundtables between Surrey-based employers and immigrant talent was held in collaboration with the Surrey Board of Trade. Four sector specific sessions were held with the goal of identifying innovative approaches to addressing employer skill shortages and immigrant labour market challenges in each particular sector.
  • Separately, for the third year in succession, the City of Surrey participated in the Connector Program, a simple and effective referral program that helps new immigrants build professional networks and connect with local job opportunities. Over 50 City of Surrey employees have supported newcomer job seekers through this unique initiative.
